Train As A Driving Instructor At Denovo Driving Tuition Peterborough
My name is John Penny, I’ve been a driving instructor for fourteen years and I’ve been a driving instructor trainer for ten years. If somebody is considering changing career and training to become a driving instructor, it might be a really good fit for them. I’ve had experience with people whose job has been under threat, they might have been made redundant and if they’ve got a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit and they’re thinking about the potential of working for themselves rather than working for somebody else, it probably just gives them the opportunity to take control of their lives, so they can choose what they do, when they do it and they can work the days and hours that they like. So, it’s sometimes the flexibility that it gives you, it’s a really really good way of moving forward and getting out of being employed and having the threat of being made redundant and so on and so forth. So, people with a passion for teaching seem to be good instructors as well. So, to me personally, I think it’s a fantastic opportunity for those reasons.
Our driving instructor training program is different from other companies because first of all, we’re a small family business and the business is set up and it’s been designed to look after people, we care about people. Sometimes with some of the larger organisations, it’s a big company and the focus is to make profit to pay for shareholders. We’re not in that business because we care about people. So, the business has been set up and certainly the instructor training programme has been set up whereby we focus very much on a one-to-one basis. A lot of the other service providers in their training programmes, they’re focussing on two-to-one training. I personally don’t believe that’s the best way of training, so we focus very much on one-to-one training. We also make sure that the majority of the training is all face-to-face, a lot of our competitors are moving away from face-to-face training and they’re going down the e-Learning route. Well there’s lots of value in that, but in our opinion the most effective way to train is one-to-one and that’s what we do with our potential driving instructors.
The training programme that we use has been designed by me, so it’s been written by me, it’s like nothing else on the market. It’s done in a holistic way, so we cover the main three parts of the training, so we talk about theory training, taking an advanced driving test and also the test of their instructional ability. But the most important thing that we do, we try and put in a lot of content, which helps people to understand where they’re going to be once they’ve qualified. Traditionally in this industry you qualify and think ‘I’ve got my professional qualification’ and then it’s almost like oh I think ‘what do I do now?’, so it’s helping and supporting newly qualified instructors and giving them the building blocks which they need to actually set out on their journey when they set off and become self-employed.
The key points that the training focusses on are trying to ensure that the client has always got good value for money, that they’re getting a good return on their investment and the training is fit-for-purpose, we try and offer a customer service which is second to none. We always reflect on our training, we’re asking our customers and our clients to give us feedback with customer service experiences and at the moment the customer service experience is tracking at 9 out of 10. So, we’re really quite confident that we can offer a really really top-quality service based on one-to-one training. It’s also local, a lot of our competitors do what we call distance learning. I’ve had an instructor recently, he lives in Peterborough, who was having to travel very close to London to do his training, which, you know, with time and money it not really particularly cost-effective.
The most rewarding aspect of the training without a shadow of a doubt is job satisfaction, I’ve never been in an industry where I’ve achieved as much job satisfaction as I have with this job. Being able to help somebody that’s not happy with their existing career or they might have been made redundant, so they might not actually be earning any money. To be able to help them to change their career, to change their lifestyle, it really just sometimes helps to revolutionise what they’re doing and it’s such a wonderful thing to be able to help that process and when they get the qualification I know how much it means to them and I can just sense how much it means to them. It’s such a wonderful opportunity for me to be part of that process, it’s absolutely brilliant.
Once the clients have successfully qualified we guarantee them a spot on the team. So, we provide top-quality support and help once they’re fully qualified, as they go out in the very first week or two with their clients and they’re starting off on their journey of learning lots about the role of being a driving instructor. So, we help and support them every step of the way. We offer a profitable full-time franchise. Some people work full-time sometimes people work part-time, so we feel that the franchise is really good value for money and again it’s been designed with the instructor in mind not the shareholders to pay for profit in mind. So, it’s very much driven by ensuring that the newly qualified instructor is getting a good return on their investment and that generally at the moment after a period of six to eight weeks a newly qualified instructor will be fully booked with a full diary. So, that’s the statistics as we are at the moment.
