2 Q or not 2 Q? – that is the question.

Imagine that you are on a dual carriageway and you can see in the distance, that due to road works, there are lane closures in place.
You are notified on approach at 800 yds of the lane closures so you have plenty of time to plan ahead.
Do you change lanes immediately and queue for 800 yds next to an empty lane or do you decide to continue to utilise the empty lane for 600 yds to ensure that traffic keeps flowing, before politely trying to merge in turn close to the lane closure?
